Educated citizens form the core of any successful society. It is impossible to overemphasize the need for proper education; society, as we know it, would collapse without education. College education prepares students for life and more often than not, it is expensive. To financially assist talented students, scholarships and other grants were instituted. This doesn’t mean there are no scholarships for the average student. In fact a number of need based scholarships exist for the average student; there are even left handed scholarships.
There are ways to finance college education, you can take a student loan, earn a scholarship or qualify for a federal grant. The Pell grant is one such federal grant sponsored by the department of education, it is awarded to undergraduate students only.
You must be enrolled in program at one of the participating institutions to qualify for a federal grant, also, you cannot apply for multiple grants. Besides federal grants, you can also apply for private scholarships sponsored by corporations, trusts, charities etc. Contact the student body or advisor at your college for more information on available scholarships.
You can also search for scholarships and contests on the internet. Some of the so called scholarships are actually contests that anyone can enter. The awarded sum, although insufficient to pay for tuition, can be used to cover other expenses. A student loan is a necessity if you run out of options, but it takes years to pay off. A part time job can supplement your grant or loan.
Scholarships and grants are practically free and hence best for financing your education, getting one, however, requires some effort. Little people of America scholarships, Tall club international student scholarships, Surfrider Foundation scholarships, etc. are some of the strange but credible private scholarships.
There is even a left handed scholarships especially for left hand people. One such left handed scholarship is the ‘Frederick and Mary F. Beckley Scholarship’ for students at the Juniata College in Pennsylvania. The primary qualifying criteria are left handedness, financial need and merit. No matter what scholarship you apply for, leadership skills, financial need and a minimum level of merit are a prerequisite.
